Free pole-dance class for mums at Northgate on Mothers Day
A former Chester financier is offering Chester mums and daughters a free pole-dancing taster session at Northgate Arena to celebrate Mothers Day.
Amy Butterworth, 28, plans to transform local women’s fitness and confidence with her classes which will run at the leisure centre for 6 weeks.
“Pole-dancing is the perfect gift for mums who want to get fit and have fun at the same time,” she said. “It’s great exercise because it tones and strengthens the whole body as well as improving cardiovascular fitness. But unlike some other types of exercise, it’s great fun too and a real confidence booster!”

The celebrate the launch of the classes mums and daughters will be able to have a spin on the pole for free between 12pm and 2pm at Northgate Arena on Mothers Day.
Amy, who previously worked as a financier at Chester Business Park, has been pole-dancing for three years and already runs classes in Buckley and Queensferry under the name of Candy & Chrome.
“The emphasis is on perfecting the spins and poses so you hardly notice you’re exercising,” she said. “I allow just five people per pole so everyone gets plenty of practice.”
Amy gave up her nine to five job after attending a pole-dancing class with a friend and falling in love with the sport.
“I had such a brilliant time that I went straight home and bought a pole for my living room,” she said. “After continuing to take lessons in my spare time I decided I’d like to turn it into a full-time profession.”
The classes at Northgate Arena, which is run by Chester and District Sports and Recreation Trust (CADSART) will start on March 22nd and run for 6 weeks.

“I want women to be able to enjoy the sport in a safe environment, with the right equipment and quality tuition, which is why Northgate Arena is the perfect location,” she said. “People who are interested in taking up the sport should be aware that there are many inexperienced teachers out there who are ‘cashing in’ on the trend and teaching unsafe methods in poor conditions.”
Although there is no pole-dancing qualification as such, Amy said it was important to ensure their instructor was dance or fitness qualified, has insurance and a first aid qualification.
Clive Donovan, operations manager of Northgate Arena, said he was delighted to be able to offer pole-dancing classes at the leisure centre.
“At Northgate Arena we don’t believe exercising should be a chore, so we try to offer our customers fun and different ways of keeping fit,” he said. “And pole-dancing fulfils that criteria perfectly. Not only is it physically demanding but it’s also a more light-hearted way of keeping fit, and we’re expecting the classes to be very popular.”
There are only ten places per class so anyone hoping to treat their mum’s to a pole-dancing lesson this Mother’s Day should book ahead.
